Terms of Use
Last updated
These terms govern the use of Buvard, an online service that turns a text, a document or a plain topic into revision cards you can export to Anki. Creating an account means accepting what follows.
What the service does
Buvard is an online service published by Vincent Pruvost, a French sole trader (SIRET 941 612 962 00022). It reads content you provide and turns it into a deck of revision cards, exportable as .apkg.
The decks it produces can be reviewed inside the app or exported as an .apkg file that Anki reads natively. The service is provided as described on the site on the day you use it: features may be added, changed or withdrawn.
Your account and how you sign in
Signing in works by magic link: you enter your email address, we send you a single-use link valid for fifteen minutes, and opening it starts your session. There is no password — so no password to remember, to steal, or to reset.
That choice has one direct consequence: the security of your Buvard account rests on the security of your mailbox. Anyone who can read your email can request a link and get in. Protect that mailbox accordingly.
You agree to use a valid email address that belongs to you, and not to open several accounts in order to get around the free plan's quota. Your session is carried by a signed cookie valid for thirty days; you can end it at any time from the app.
Plans, quotas and payment
Buvard offers a free plan and a Pro plan. The free plan allows four decks per month, in question-and-answer format. The Pro plan removes that limit and unlocks all three card formats and language-learning mode. Your usage for the current month is shown in the app, on the generation screen.
Two points that apply to both plans. First, reading text from images with character recognition is capped at fifteen images per month on the free plan and two hundred on Pro: every image goes through a vision model, whose cost is nothing like that of text. Past that cap the image is not read, and the app tells you so. Second, your generation history is kept for as long as your account exists, whatever your plan — it is not a Pro-only feature.
Prices, quotas and the contents of each plan are those displayed on the site when you subscribe. They may change for the future; an unfavourable change never applies retroactively to a period you have already paid for.
Passes are sold through Polar, which acts as reseller and merchant of record. The contract of sale is therefore between you and Polar Software, Inc., not with the publisher of Buvard: Polar takes the payment, issues the invoice, and collects then remits the VAT or sales tax applicable in your country. No payment details pass through Buvard or are stored by it. Under articles L221-18 and following of the French Consumer Code, you have fourteen days to withdraw; if you asked for the pass to start immediately, you remain liable for an amount in proportion to the period already elapsed. Refund requests go to Polar, as the seller of the pass.
What you upload stays yours
The texts, documents and images you upload remain your property. We claim no rights over them and use them for no purpose other than the one you asked for: producing your cards. They are never sold, transferred, or used to train an AI model.
You must, however, hold the rights to whatever you upload. Uploading a copyrighted book, material distributed under a restrictive licence, or confidential information that is not yours, is your responsibility alone.
The cards produced from your material are yours as well. You can export them and take them elsewhere at any time, unconditionally, including after a subscription ends.
Cards are written by an AI — check them
Cards are produced by a language model supplied by OpenAI. Models of this kind get things wrong: they can restate a point inaccurately, add a detail your document never contained, split a definition in the wrong place, or mark the wrong option as correct in a multiple-choice question.
So read your cards before you learn them. Buvard is a drafting aid, not an authority: revising a wrong card means memorising a mistake. That check is yours to make, especially in subjects where accuracy has consequences — health, law, safety, formal examinations.
To write those cards, the material you supply is sent to OpenAI, which also performs character recognition on any images you upload. That processor is established outside the European Union. The privacy policy sets out the transfer in detail. Do not upload to Buvard anything you cannot hand to a third-party provider: health data, trade secrets, or other people's personal data.
What you must not do
You agree not to use Buvard to:
- upload or generate unlawful, hateful or defamatory material, or anything that infringes someone else's rights;
- upload other people's personal data without a legal basis, or special-category data within the meaning of the GDPR;
- get around the quotas, whether by opening multiple accounts or by any other means;
- automate requests, scrape the service at scale, or otherwise degrade it;
- attempt to reach other users' accounts, decks or data;
- resell access to the service, or pass its output off as another publisher's.
A breach may lead to immediate suspension of the account, with no refund of the current period where the abuse is clear.
Availability
We do what is needed to keep the service running, but we guarantee no level of availability. Maintenance, a hosting outage or an outage of OpenAI's API can interrupt generation, temporarily and without notice.
The service depends on third-party providers whose continuity is outside our control. Should a prolonged outage affect a pass in progress, write to us: the lost period is extended by the same amount, or refunded pro rata. Refunds are carried out by Polar, which handles them as the seller.
No warranty
The service is provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty that the cards generated are accurate, complete or suited to your exam. No academic or professional outcome is promised or implied.
Statutory consumer guarantees still apply: this clause does not set them aside.
Liability
We are not liable for indirect loss: revision time wasted, a failed exam, loss of opportunity, or commercial damage.
We remain liable for direct damage attributable to us, within the limits set by law. Nothing here restricts the rights the law grants consumers, in particular the conformity guarantee.
You remain responsible for what you upload and for how you use the cards produced.
Ending your account
You can stop using the service whenever you like. Account deletion happens inside the app, in the app, on the Settings screen, Data tab: it erases your account, your decks, your cards, your progress, your folders and your generation history. It takes effect at once and cannot be undone.
Export your data first: the same screen offers a full JSON export, and every deck can be exported as an .apkg file. Files already imported into Anki are on your own machine and are unaffected.
On our side, an account may be suspended or closed for a serious breach of these terms, with notice by email except in an emergency or a case of obvious illegality.
Changes to these terms
These terms may change. Where a change is substantial, account holders are told by email or in the app before it takes effect. The date of the latest revision appears at the top of this page.
Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by French law. In the event of a dispute, and failing an amicable settlement, the French courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, you may also bring the matter before the court where you live.
